dress Tarkhan

Originally excavated by Egyptologist Flinders Petrie in 1913 from a First Dynasty tomb at Tarkhan (an Egyptian cemetery located 50km south of Cairo) this dress lay undiscovered with various other textiles until 1977, when the bundle was sent to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum for conservation work.

shroud

This piece of painted material belongs to the category of "shrouds" and "votive cloths" which have been found in the funerary temple of Montuhotep II at Deir el-Bahari. The majority of fabrics show the male or female owner in the middle of presenting offerings to the goddess Hathor. According to the iconographic details, one distinguishes different groups. The Brussels example belongs to the group which depicts the cow-goddess in a processional barque. Three small columns of hieroglyphs, which surmount the scene, mention the name of the owner and of the local goddess.

cloth

This cloth, which was part of the É. de Meester de Ravestein collection, bears the mark of the temple of Mentuhotep II. A detailed examination has shown that the fringed selvage, a characteristic which one finds on several cloths of the same category (compare E.6855), was not only decorative but also essentially technological.
