SOCKS

SOCKS
The use of socks, with a single toe division, was introduced into Egypt after the Pharaonic Period, when Hellenistic Greek costume replaced earlier clothing types. The material, wool, is also a late innovation in Egypt, where linen had previously been used almost exclusively. This example comes from the only Roman town founded in Egypt, Antinoopolis in Middle Egypt, dedicated to Hadrian's lover Antinous who died in the river at the site.
